CultureHISTORY: The Man from #Ferguson

On August 13th, when all hell broke loose in Ferguson, a local photographer captured this photo which has gone nationwide. It’s an image of a black man with dreads wearing an American flag shirt, throwing a tear gas canister back at the police officers while holding a bag of chips. He later said that he was only trying to get the canister away from him and some kids standing nearby.

His name is Edward (all we know so far) and he has become sort of a folk hero. Once people found him on Twitter, the salutes have not stopped and his feed is full ‘thank yous’ and respect from around the U.S. and the world. An artist has already done a rendering as a painting. Something about this photo has captivated people beyond any other and it’s become an iconic image of the protests.
I suspect he’ll be hitting the media circuits soon. Now that he’s gone national, he was thinking of changing his handle but people convinced him to leave it as is.  Twitter: @eyeFLOODpanties.

LESSONS I LEARNED FROM VIDEO GAMES (feel free to add your own!)
Mass Effect: There will always be people telling you the fight is impossible. Fight anyway.
Assassin's Creed: Heroes can come from anywhere.
Fez: Sometimes solving a puzzle only takes looking at it from a different angle.
inFAMOUS: Give people second chances. They might surprise you.
Journey: The road may be long, but you don't have to walk it alone.
Civilization: Not all victories are the same.
Borderlands: Sometimes, you just need to laugh at yourself.
Minecraft: There is no limit to your imagination.
Skyrim: Practice makes perfect.
Pokemon: Friendship can overcome amazing odds.
Katamari Damacy: Even the smallest person can do something great.
Bioshock: Appearances can be deceiving. Even something that appears perfect can have deep flaws.
Dragon Age: Some things can't be changed. What matters is how you adapt to them.
Fallout: Even after the worst disasters, things can be rebuilt.
The Sims: No one man should have all that power.
The Last Of Us: Sometimes redemption comes from the most unexpected places.
Tetris: Do the best you can with what you have.
Portal: If you can't find a way, make your own.
flOw: Adaptation is the key to survival.
The Legend of Zelda: You might be thrown into a bad situation without knowing what to do, but you can always find support from the people around you to make it through the chaos.
